A New Approach to Combating Cyber Risks

Cyber attacks are among the most significant threats facing businesses today and are evolving rapidly. Phishing, CEO fraud, ransom ware and software vulnerabilities are becoming harder for organizations to address in time. The emergence of generative AI has further enabled attackers to launch highly targeted and sophisticated campaigns at scale.

Berlin-based insurtech Baobab Insurance is addressing this challenge through a dual approach that combines cyber insurance with active risk mitigation. As the first provider in Germany to integrate cyber insurance with continuous risk monitoring, Baobab moves beyond traditional models that focus only on recovery after an incident. Its platform offers AI-driven underwriting, real-time monitoring and continuous risk assessments.

The platform is designed to tackle key cyber threats such as ransomware attacks that disrupt operations, phishing campaigns that exploit human behavior, fraudulent transactions and vulnerabilities in third-party software. By continuously scanning digital environments for risks and exposures, the system identifies and mitigates issues before they can lead to financial loss or reputational damage.

“The platform’s flexibility allows partners to integrate cyber protection as a core component of enterprise risk strategies”

The scale of cybercrime is significant. Global damages are expected to exceed €12 trillion by 2027, with the European Union projected to absorb around a quarter of this impact. In Germany, cyber-related financial losses increased by 29% last year alone, according to the federal office for the protection of the constitution.

Baobab’s model addresses this need by offering more than just insurance payouts. It helps clients understand where they are vulnerable and supports efforts to close those gaps. According to company data, this proactive approach has already helped prevent more than €10 million in potential losses across its customer base in the last three years.

Willi Mannheims, Managing Partner at eCAPITAL, is one of Baobab’s latest investors and supports its emphasis on prevention and proactive risk management. His firm’s investment underscores market confidence in Baobab’s integrated model and its ability to address growing cyber risks with measurable impact.

Baobab also supports brokers who manage cybersecurity offerings for their clients. The platform’s flexibility allows partners to integrate cyber protection as a core component of enterprise risk strategies. With evolving threats and rising costs, the company aims to make cyber insurance an active part of organizational resilience.
